Google Real Time Search Announced

You are here: Home » SEO » Google Real Time Search Announced

Back in September I blogged about a Google URL trick that allowed you to view so-called real time search results. The issue with this was that it wasn’t exactly real time search results that were being displayed, as pages needed to be indexed first before they could be listed.

Today, however, that changes, as Google have announced they will now be providing users with real time results. The search feature, similar to Twitter, will allow users to view instant results from social networking websites, blogs, forums and news portals (although it is mostly Twitter at the moment).

The new feature hasn’t been rolled out fully yet, but will be over the next few days, according to the Google Blog. The real time results can be found through Google Trends, showing that a section of the normally static results are now being constantly updated.

EDIT: The link above appears to have stopped showing the instant results, but they can still be found here.

The Google real time search video is below:

The announcement on the Google blog explains in a little more detail:

…we’re introducing new features that bring your search results to life with a dynamic stream of real-time content from across the web. Now, immediately after conducting a search, you can see live updates from people on popular sites like Twitter and FriendFeed, as well as headlines from news and blog posts published just seconds before. When they are relevant, we’ll rank these latest results to show the freshest information right on the search results page.

This is a huge news today as Google have taken the step that has been expected for quite a long time within the search industry. There have been rumours that Google would try to buy out Twitter to extend the real time search capabilities, but they have gone ahead and released the feature themselves.

With this changing the way people will be able to find results, how will this effect the SEO industry? It’s certainly an interesting one!

They have said it would be released days ago. I’m yet to see a working example.

Im just not sure how this helps find products and services… To me this seems like it will just open the door for marketers to quickly rank on Google…

I have been experimenting with the Twitter search results on Google for the last few days.

Search for something like ‘Rage Against The Machine’ and Brittany Murphy’ and you will see the latest tweets.

This was useful for me because I wanted to find out whether RATM had beaten the X-Factor song to number 1 in the UK and it delivered the answer within seconds.

At the same time, however, no other web pages in the Google search results had been updated with the news – Result, I found what I was looking for through real-time search!

Can’t see it having much utility other than social news though, but from what I can tell, thats the only time its being implemented.
