"Longer search queries, averaging searches of 5+ words in length, have increased 10 percent comparing January 2009 to January 2008." Quite a dramatic increase really, and could definitely be one of the main factors why Google have decided to increase the search bar. They know that their every move is scrutinized and debated on SEO forums up and down the web, so they're making meaningless aesthetic changes just to watch the fur fly.
