Surely they’d just increase the width if it was to accomodate longer search strings, rather than up the whole size of the font?

TBH I think it looks rubbish, but hey, I have Greasemonkey installed so I just went and found this:

That file is quite interesting actually Rob.
“Longer search queries, averaging searches of 5+ words in length, have increased 10 percent comparing January 2009 to January 2008.”
Quite a dramatic increase really, and could definitely be one of the main factors why Google have decided to increase the search bar. But then again, as Andy said, it could be a completely pointless change.

According to this http://image.exct.net/lib/fefc1774726706/d/1/SearchEngines_Jan09.pdf search queries are on the increase. But I agree with Andy, it’s probably just so the homepage looks better for the interent elite who all have widescreen Macs

In all honesty, I think they’re playing it for shits and giggles.

They know that their every move is scrutinized and debated on SEO forums up and down the web, so they’re making meaningless aesthetic changes just to watch the fur fly.

Either that, or it’s got some sort of usability benefit we mere mortals can’t spot.
