Excellent post. I agree. :)

I'm writing this about an hour after deleting my FaceBook account (hopefully it will truly be wiped. I followed special directions.) :) I really like Twitter because it's simple and isn't filled with distracting apps, etc. I hope that it remains that way. I'm selective about who I follow now which cuts down on spammy tweets. I was doing reciprocal follow in the beginning, thinking that I had to, but now I don't because being genuine is important to me. I use Seeismic Desktop to login to Twitter because it's more feature-rich than Twitter but still simple overall.

I use Twitter to learn more about my niche, promote my main site and also to promote other people's sites, ideas and products if I think that they might be of interest to other people in my niche.

I dreaded engaging in social media in the beginning, but Twitter has been great, so that has been such a relief. It has helped me with my business, no question. 3 of my friends use Twitter but we rarely interact that way because that's what e-mail, the phone and in person meetings are for. We don't want to clog up our Twitter accounts with back and forths that would likely be of no interest to others.

Thanks for the comment Michael!

You forgot to mention Yahoo meme, which is now trying it's hand at competing with Twitter too. I'm not quite sure how Facebook plans to incorporate FriendFeed... maybe it will stay completely separate. I use FriendFeed, but only for the simple fact that my profile is updated automatically when I update my Twitter. I can see it growing in popularity, but I'm not sure how many people will be physically using it, and going on the site, due to being able to feed from other social networking websites.

As I've said a couple of times in various places, I think Twitter is in a bit of a league of it's own when it comes to social networking. It's simple, and it works. It may not attract the numbers of Facebook, but I love it the way it is.

With all of the others trying to compete with Twitter, I hope Twitter doesn't try to compete with them. By this, I mean I hope Twitter doesn't try to add extra functionality and become too fancy.

Very well said, Twitter will never replace blogging for the simple fact that you're limited to 140 characters! However it is a fantastic tool for you to use for bringing people to your blog.

With tools like twittgeek (which "Follows Geeks Like You On Twitter!" only 200 a day for free but it's fantastic for discovering new and interesting blogs!), Truetwitt (which validates user's status as human) and wefollow (which is similar in functionality to twellow), twitter has lots of power to attract people to your full blog!

But what of sites like tumblr and friendfeed (reccently bought by facebook!)? Do they stand a chance of competing? Well now both of these Twitteresque sites are adding a Twitter compatability feature which allows them to communicate with each other.

Where does this all end? Are we on the way to complete cross site functionality?

I'm not a Proefessional Twit yet but careful you keep your following / follower count balanced (ie you have more followers than you follow) so you dont look like a bot :)
